Current Top 5 Ranked NCAA Division I Men's Soccer Teams

By OPSM Network·Sep 25, 2026·5 min read

The 2026 NCAA Division I men's soccer season is beginning to take shape, and some of the biggest programs in college soccer are already separating themselves from the pack.

For young players with ambitions of competing at the NCAA Division I level, following the national rankings is about more than seeing which school sits at No. 1. It offers a look at the standards required to compete at the highest level of college soccer, from tactical discipline and defensive organization to technical quality, consistency, and the ability to perform against ranked opposition.

The Week 5 United Soccer Coaches national poll, released on September 22, brought a new team to the top of NCAA Division I men's soccer. South Carolina climbed to No. 1, followed by Indiana, SMU, Maryland, and Georgetown. Here is a closer look at the current top five.

1. South Carolina Gamecocks

Record: 7-0-0Previous ranking: No. 4

South Carolina has been one of the biggest stories of the 2026 college soccer season. The Gamecocks moved into the No. 1 position for the first time in program history after beginning the campaign with seven consecutive victories. They received all eight first-place votes in the Week 5 coaches poll. South Carolina was also the only Division I men's program remaining both unbeaten and untied at the time of the ranking. Even more impressive has been the level of opposition South Carolina has faced. The Gamecocks had already collected four victories against nationally ranked opponents by the time they reached No. 1. Forward Loic Sany Kong has emerged as an important attacking player and was leading the team in goals entering the latest rankings. South Carolina's rise is also an important reminder for recruits that the college soccer landscape is constantly evolving. Traditional powerhouse programs remain major destinations, but opportunities exist across Division I for players capable of making an immediate impact. What players can learn: Consistency matters. Reaching the top of the rankings requires producing results week after week, especially when facing high-level opposition.

2. Indiana Hoosiers

Record: 7-0-1Previous ranking: No. 2

Few names carry more weight in NCAA men's soccer than Indiana. The Hoosiers have once again placed themselves among the country's elite, but one of the most impressive parts of their 2026 start has been their defensive performance. Through their first eight games, Indiana recorded five clean sheets and allowed only three goals. One of their standout performances came against nationally ranked Washington, when the Hoosiers earned a 1-0 victory and became the first team that season to hold Washington scoreless. Goalkeeper Michal Mroz made eight saves in the match. Indiana has since remained unbeaten, drawing 1-1 with Wisconsin on September 22 to move to 7-0-2 overall. The Hoosiers provide a good example of what high-level college programs value beyond attacking statistics. Defensive positioning, game management, work rate and tactical discipline can be just as important as goals and assists. What players can learn: Coaches recruit players who can contribute to winning in multiple ways. Your value is not measured exclusively by the number of goals you score.

3. SMU Mustangs

Record: 7-0-1Previous ranking: No. 5

SMU's rise into the No. 3 position has come through an impressive opening stretch of the season. The Mustangs have produced several statement performances, including a 4-0 victory over then-No. 4 Saint Louis and a 6-0 win over Houston Christian. They also opened ACC play with a 3-1 road victory at Pittsburgh. Those performances demonstrate the balance required from elite Division I teams. It is not enough to dominate weaker opposition. The best programs must also show that their style and quality can translate against nationally competitive teams and in conference play. For aspiring college players, SMU is also another example of the level of depth present within top NCAA programs. Competition does not stop once a player receives an offer or reaches a college roster. Every training session becomes an opportunity to earn minutes against teammates who were often standout players at their previous clubs or academies. What players can learn: Getting recruited is only the first step. Players must arrive at college prepared to compete for their position every day.

4. Maryland Terrapins

Record: 6-1-0Previous ranking: No. 8

Maryland climbed four places in the latest poll after another strong stretch of results. The Terrapins started the year 6-1-0, including wins over Pittsburgh, High Point, Georgetown and Wisconsin. Their 3-2 victory against Georgetown stands out in particular considering that Georgetown now sits directly behind Maryland at No. 5 nationally. Maryland's attack has also been distributed across its roster. Through its first seven games, the program scored 14 goals and recorded 19 assists, demonstrating that chance creation has not depended entirely on one player. After suffering a 4-0 defeat to Northwestern, Maryland responded by beating Wisconsin 1-0. That response is important. College seasons move quickly, and even the strongest programs will experience difficult results. The ability to react positively can determine whether one defeat becomes a temporary setback or the beginning of a poor run. What players can learn: Coaches watch how players respond to adversity. Mistakes and losses happen, but mentality and response are major parts of performing at the next level.

5. Georgetown Hoyas

Record: 6-1-1Previous ranking: No. 9

Rounding out the top five is Georgetown, another program that has quickly climbed the national rankings. The Hoyas have shown significant attacking potential throughout the opening stages of the season. Georgetown defeated Duke 3-0, Oregon State 3-0 and nationally ranked High Point 5-1 before opening BIG EAST play with another 3-0 victory against Marquette. One player making a significant impact has been Mitchell Baker. He scored his seventh goal of the season in Georgetown's win over Marquette, while the Hoyas have received attacking contributions from several other players across the squad. Georgetown also provides an example of the intensity of top-level college soccer. Their only defeat entering the rankings came in a tight 3-2 match against Maryland, which is now ranked one position ahead of them. The current top five: 1. South Carolina (7-0-0) · 2. Indiana (7-0-1) · 3. SMU (7-0-1) · 4. Maryland (6-1-0) · 5. Georgetown (6-1-1).
